There must have been a special feeling in the upper room between Jesus and his friends, when they gathered for what we've come to call the Last Supper. During the Passover meal, the sharing of bread and wine commemorated the Exodus, the escape from slavery in Egypt. The Jew who took part in that supper liturgy was "lifted back" in time and space—at least in spirit—to the time of the Exodus. By sharing the Passover meal, one felt the same liberating love of God as did the first Israelites.
Today, through the breaking of the bread and drinking of the wine, Jesus gives us a way to be "lifted back" in time and space in order to feel his liberating love and presence. This is what we share every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist. |
