We don't expect to see poor people in our neck of the woods. They aren't in our networks: they aren't at the same gatherings; they don't belong to clubs and committees; they don't always go to church; they don't bump into us at the mall or supermarket.
If we want the poor to take advantage of help, we need to find them. To find them, we need to go out of our way. We need to look with different eyes, for the poor feel that we do not want them in the normal parts of our lives. So they disguise themselves or disappear. It takes initiative and creativity to reach the poor. |
