Fast Facts: Haiti

Real World, Real Faith: Haiti Earthquake

A powerful earthquake hit the nation of Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 resulting in massive loss of life and total chaos on the island.  The capital city of Port Au Prince was particularly hard hit, with few buildings left undamaged.

30 days later, the Haitian government estimates 230,000 lives lost and 1,000,000 homeless.

We know that catastrophes happen. We don’t understand them, but we know they happen.  And, as people of faith, we know that God is at work in the midst of them.

As people of faith, we know that God calls us to stand in solidarity with those among us who are suffering the most. Today, the “least of these” must surely be the people of Haiti.

Let us pray and act together on behalf of God’s people and the Church of Haiti.

Please use these resources and share them with friends, family, youth groups and campus ministries.

5 Things You Can Do to Help Haiti Today

Pray early and often
Pray every time you change classes today. Pray every time you sit down or stand up. Pray every time you get or send a text. Pray every time you tweet or retweet.

Organize a fast and collection for Haiti Relief
The average American spends $3-$10 dollars each day on lunch. Invite friends, family, parish, and campus to fast from lunch for just one day in the next week and to contribute  the money they would have used for lunch to a collection providing relief to the people of Haiti. After the funds are collected, forward donations to Catholic Relief Services or other organizations mobilizing aid for Haiti.

Start your own fundraiser
In less than 5 minutes you can start your own fundraising page for Haiti at Mercy Corps and start fundraising online for Haiti.

Text for the cause
But be careful. There are already reports of scams. Two good options are:
Text YELE to 501501 to donate $5 to singer Wyclef Jean's Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund, OR
Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross

***Don't forget to talk to your parents or whoever pays your cell phone bill - donations are charged to your next bill!

A Prayer At a Time of Need

O Gracious God who knows all our needs
And who cares for us daily with such great love,
Be with the people of Haiti,
Who are in need of your presence.
May your light surround them;
May your love be their support
And may your life flow through them.
We dedicate the actions, prayers and duties of our day
For their needs at this difficult time.
