Black Catholic History Month

You'd pretty much have to be living under a rock to not realize that every February our country celebrates Black History Month. We use the month to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans and to recognize the contributions that African Americans have made to our nation and our culture from the earliest days of US history.

But.....

Did you know that the month of November is designated as a time for the Church to celebrate the gifts, charisms and faith history of Black Catholics? No? No worries - read on:

The dedication of a Black Catholic History Month was initiated in the summer of 1990 by the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus. The month of November was chosen for the celebration because many dates that are significant to Black Catholics fall within this month, including All Saints Day, All Souls Day, and the Feast of St. Martin de Porres.

During Black Catholic History Month, all Catholics have an opportunity to learn how our history and heritage as Catholic Christians has been shaped by the witness, ministry and legacies of Black Catholics. And we have the opportunity to see those that carry history forward today.

So, consider this your invitation! In November, get to know more about how YOUR faith has been enriched by the lives and ministries of Black Catholics. Start here:

New profiles and new snapshots will be added throughout November!
