NOW: ValLimar Jansen

That voice - that rich, soul-gripping, goosebump raising, feel it in your bones voice - rings out loud and clear whenever she takes the stage. It is a voice that understands the gift and the Giver.

ValLimar Jansen is the woman behind that voice.

If you’ve ever seen or heard ValLimar, you know exactly what that means. ValLimar doesn’t just tell stories, she weaves them – and weaves her audience into them. ValLimar doesn’t just read God’s Word or sing of God’s goodness, she proclaims it!

And she’s been doing that since she was five years old.

Raised in a Baptist church in Louisiana, ValLimar first asked to sing in the church choir when she was five. At first, she was told she was too young. Persistence paid off and her ministry began when she was allowed to sing “In the Garden.”

As the music and the ministry continued, so did the journey. ValLimar was received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1991 through the RCIA. And both she and the Church are blessed for it.

Through her music and storytelling, ValLimar Jansen both honors the past and inspires hope for the future.  In her recordings, Jansen has covered many of the African American hymns that she was raised on in hopes that they might inspire a whole new generation. In fact, all but one of the titles on her latest release Anointing are traditional spirituals with new arrangements by ValLimar and her husband and creative partner, Frank Jansen.

Though ValLimar received most of her training in music and performance from Howard University  in Washington, D.C.,  she holds degrees in the arts from California State University, San Bernardino and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Today, she is a college professor, a nationally known speaker and storyteller, and a popular leader of worship and prayer at conferences and events across the country.

When she’s not on stage or in the studio, what’s ValLimar’s favorite downtime activity? She likes to veg on the couch with her three loves: husband Frank and their two white schanuzers, Seraphim and Rowdy. “It’s fun to watch them compete to see who can get the most attention.”
