Altar servers

Q I am an alter server at my local church. I recently moved from a church in another area. At my old church, the servers were intructed to always bow to the priest out of respect when giving him something (like the holy water) during mass. At my new parish, nothing is mentioned and nobody does it. Is it a "right" or "wrong" thing or is it just the parish and/or priest's preference?

A

It is the priest's preference, I would say. He may be feeling that, in truth, it's to Jesus that we bow--and find it uncomfortable to be on the receiving end of  bowing. On the other hand, the servers at your new parish may not have been trained on the finer points of server action. When I was your age, I wasn't ALLOWED to be a server (even though I could rattle off the reponses with the best of the boys), so I'm happy for you--and proud for our gender that you can participate in this way. I would ask your pastor (not in the presence of other servers) about his preference and respect it--whatever anyone else does or doesn't do.
