The green of the wreath represents hope, the hope of Eternal Life that we have in God. The violet of the candles for the first, second, and fourth Sunday represents royalty; we are anticipating the birth of the "King of Kings." The rose of the third Sunday represents joy, joy that the birth of the Lord is now close at hand. These are also the meanings of the green, violet, and rose colored vestments worn by the priest as well.
