Married bishops?

Q How come bishops must take oaths of chastity if the Bible says that they must be "blameless and the husband of one wife"?

A What the Bible intends by this passage is that the bishop has not been married many times, indicating a lack of stability. The translation in the New American Bible reveals this a little more clearly. It reads, "Whoever aspires to the office of bishop desires a noble task. Therefore, a bishop must be irreproachable, married only once, temperate, self-controlled...etc." When you read "married only once" in the midst of these other criteria, it seems clear that it's just one of many sorts of evidence that the candidate is "irreproachable." It doesn't REQUIRE that he be married...just that he hasn't been married lots of times, in the manner of Donald Trump.
