Abstinence is simply the act of not engaging in, or partaking of, something. During lent the Church requires abstinence from meat on Fridays; that simply means not eating meat. We often here of talk of abstinence in reference to sexuality; in that context it means not engaging in sexual activity. (An abstinence that everybody should observe until marriage.) |
