Lust

Q My friend says that, "if you like a person's body, you like the person." My gut tells me this just isn't right. For instance, lets say there is a beautiful girl who is always mean to you.  You can like how she looks, yes. But does that mean that you like her? I don't think so. But in the Catechism it says that the body and the soul are one. In that sense...it makes sense that if you like the body, you like the person. However, this just doesn't seem right to me. I don't see how liking how someone looks automatically means you like them. I have a feeling this has something to do with Original sin. In the begining Adam and Eve were naked. They didn't have to be ashamed. But now, because of their sin, things have changed. People now look at others lustfully. Well, anyhow, I'm confused. Could you please help me?

A

The Body is only one aspect of the person.  If we concentrate only on the body then we are not really dealing with a person in his/her totality-- we have reduced a living, breathing person to nothing more than an object.  And while we love people we merely use objects.  The body alone is not the person.  Liking the body without regards to the whole person is lust, pure and simple.

You hit the nail on the head when you said "I have a feeling this has something to do with Original Sin"!  The fact that we can so readily reduce people to objects for our own gratification is a direct result of the sin of our first parents.
