Q I have a question on morality to ask. The civil law where I live desribes my hometown as being in a "dry" county. ("Dry," as in the sale of alcohol is illegal here.) There was quite a stir around here when the law was streched so as some resturants could reciever liquor licenses. My question is: what exactly does the Church think about the issue of drinking, "wet" and "dry", etc.?

A

The Church has nothing to say about wet and dry counties, although I suspect some pastors have probably weighed in on it out of concern about alcoholism among their parishioners. The Church would say that the law is to be obeyed and respected, if it exists where you live.

Regarding food, alcohol and other substances that can be used responsibly--or not--the Church's teaching is consistent. It's not what goes into a person that is evil; it's what comes out. If alcohol makes a person irresponsible, dangerous or violent, then THAT person should not drink.
