Adoption

Q I'm adopted and a friend of mine told me that it is wrong for me to accept Communion, because I am not in full unity with the Church because I don't know whether or not my biological parents were Catholics. Is this true?

A

That person is not a very good or well-informed friend. Baptism in Christ is not passed down through your biological genes! It's not inherited like a piece of china! Apparently you were adopted by Catholics, who had you baptized. You are baptized in Christ and a full member of the family.

It's nice--and good--to know things about your biological parents, but your adoptive parents have given you a great gift through faith--and it's yours! Your friend is not correct. You're part of the family and we welcome you to the table.
