The word Adam means man in Hebrew. The answer is complex beyond any simple reply, but Catholics speak of Adam and Eve as the first couple created by God. The story of Creation is a teaching story, one to illustrate that man and woman are the pinnacle of God's work of creation. It's not to learn their names; it's to learn their place, their role, their responsibility!
