A priest is being sent away for studies

Q I am a Catholic in a small farm town in North Dakota and a few years ago my parents transferred me to a bigger parish because our small church wasn't really working with the youth to expand our knowledge of Catholicism or to help us with service projects. Now that I am really into my faith, I would really love to help my friends from my old church to be able to experience Catholicism and Christianity the way I do. How do I get a "Youth Group" type program going in our small church again?

A

Dear Carrie,

Both your former and your current parishes are part of a group called a diocese. Some dioceses have an office of youth ministry. If they don't, they should, but budget sometimes prevents it from happening. If they don't, they still have an office called the chancery. Somebody at your new parish will know the number, I'm sure. When you call the number, ask for the office which assists youth ministry in parishes. Someone at that extension will be pleased to help, I feel confident.

You can be ready with some ideas yourself. Perhaps your new parish can team up with your old one and have a SHARED youth group. Many parishes do such things--it's a lot more fun when there are more young people to draw from for activities.

Two final thoughts:

I wish you well. You seem to be a very generous and faithful Catholic teen.

Hug your parents. They sound pretty great too!
