An Advent wreath is something Catholics can use to help us prepare for Christmas. Since we invented it--and it's meant to help us--we can make it out of anything we want. I've seen ceramic ones for sale at religious-goods stores, for instance. I've also seen four-candle packages in purple and pink or all white.
When I first learned about Advent wreaths (about 30 years ago, probably), it felt like it was a Christmas wreath-turned-centerpiece, done in purple and pink, rather than red and green. I don't think I was too far off base. You can use real greens or an artificial Christmas wreath, four candles (three purple and one pink--or four white, with ribbon hinting at the purple and pink).
I personally think it's nice to have that become a Christmas wreath (at home) by changing the colors, putting in new candles (not pink and purple any more!) and even placing a manger scene within the wreath--but that's just my Martha Stewart take on the concept! |
