Ouija Board

Q In response to the Exorcist question you mentioned the ouiji board as being a way for Satan to be let into our lives. Doesn't all sin let Satan and his minions into our lives? Does this mean that the more we sin, the more open we are to Satan's attacks, even if those attacks don't necessarily result in full blown possession?

A

You are correct, certainly, that all sin weakens us in a way that can allow the forces of evil to have more control over us. But most people who are sinners are not usually so because they are seeking a meeting with Satan or the powers of darkness, but because they are weak human beings. I see a difference here. If a person using the Oujia Board isn't just playing a parlor game, but actually wants to be in touch with dark powers, that person is inviting evil in.

When you become impatient with your mother, you are being careless, even cruel, but you aren't trying to harness demonic powers. I see a difference in intent, which is important in Catholic thought. The Ten Commandments, which many faiths hold in common, warn against sins of thought (not about Ouija Boards, indeed). But thought is powerful and our reasons for doing things matter.
