Does the church have an opinion on books like the Harry Potter series, with witchcraft in them? I feel that while there are parts in the books about witchcraft, the main theme of the stories is a clear seperation of good and evil. Is this idea valid? |

The Church as a whole isn't likely to "rule" on Harry Potter. Harry just isn't "big" enough (although it does feel like it, especially when a new book is expected in June!) to warrant any specific praise or condemnation. But important teachers in the Church DO say things from time to time. Recently some Commissions who work in the Vatican issued a teaching document on the New Age. At the press conference releasing this document, they were asked about Harry Potter. They praised the books along the same lines you mention--good vs. evil. They thought the books taught well on this subject. I've read all the books so far, as well as some analysis. One analyst said that Harry isn't very good at spells--and that they generally serve as a "comic device" because he's so poor at them! So much for the power of witchcraft in Harry's hands! |
