OK - two great programs I learned about recently that are great ways to involve young people in direct service to the hungry and the homeless in the community:

1. Happy Helpers for the Homeless - this program was started by a young woman in Baltimore, MD who was moved by the life of Mother Teresa. She decided that if Mother Teresa could do all the amazing things she did in her life to reach out to the poor and the marginalized, then she could at least help feed the hungry in her community. She gathered some friends together to make bag lunches that could be personally delivered to the folks in need in her community. Simple idea - simple start that has now grown to include chapters across the country. Check 'em out at www.happyhelpersforthehomeless.org.

2. Project Hope Bags - Another way cool idea. This one was started by a parish in Texas. People donate non-perishable food items to the Project Hope Bags program. Volunteers put together bags containing donated food, information about where to get additional assistance, and personal notes of encouragement and give them to church members or other volunteers who keep them in their cars. When they see someone on the streets, at stoplights, etc. who needs assistance, they give them a Hope Bag. What a great way to respond to a neighbor in need! More info at www.hopebags.com.
