Review: WALL-E

There aren’t many movies out there that are worth the $10-$12 ticket price, but WALL-E might just be the exception.

Want a movie that doesn’t require deep thought and an extra Red Bull so you can stay up all night dissecting it with friends? WALL-E is easy and simple entertainment. Sit back, relax, enjoy!

Want a movie that inspires, challenges and raises the warning flag on important social and spiritual issues? That’s WALL-E too. The film contains youth-group-worthy clips on everything from care of God’s creation and the dignity of the human person to conversion and discipleship.

What you see in WALL-E depends largely on what you are looking for. On the surface, the story of a lonely little robot who finds both love and adventure is a nice little two-hour brain escape. But, if you dig, even the least little bit, you find a story about dignity and worth and hope. Who knows - you might even find something Biblical.

And that wouldn’t surprise the film’s director, Pixar’s Andrew Stanton. In an interview with Christianity Today, Stanton was asked about the Biblical themes that seem to be suggested in the film and how his Christian faith influences his approach to making movies. Stanton's reply ties it all up nicely:

They tell you that as a storyteller, it's vital to just stick with and be honest with your values system. The last thing I want to do is go to a movie and feel like I'm being preached to or being told how to be, and I think it's more honest—and you're going to have more effect—to be truthful with the values of your characters, working off of your own values. That was the case with WALL•E. The greatest commandment is to love one another, and to me, that's the ultimate purpose of living. So that was the perfect goal for the loneliest robot on earth, to learn the greatest commandment, to learn to love.

Final thoughts on this instant classic? LOVED it !

This movie was awesome!! During a homily my priest used the plant from the movie, Wall-E, as a metaphor for the word of God. The message was that the word of God can not be stopped.
