Most simply, a chalice is the cup used at Mass to hold the wine which becomes the Precious Blood. A chalice is normally consecrated with chrism by the bishop. Historically, chalices, as sacred vessels, were made of precious metals or were gold-plated. However, since Vatican II,  chalices may be made of other materials such as glass, stone, or wood.
