Definition: Conscience, Examination of
We examine our conscience to determine whether or not our lives conform to God's best wishes for us—to make sure that our basic direction is God-ward (grace) not away from God (sin).
There are many ways to examine your conscience. An adaptation of one St. Ignatius developed is a five-step process: 1) Turn to God and thank God for all the gifts you've received. Gratitude is the natural response to grace enriching our lives. 2) Ask God to help you be honest in looking at yourself. 3) Review your actions and attitudes starting from the last time you examined your conscience. 4) Ask God to pardon you for faulty responses. 5) Resolve to respond more fully to God's grace [by deciding to consistently make decisions that move toward God.]
