Definition: Conscience
Our ability to judge right and wrong behavior. In the difficult process of forming our conscience, we search for the truth: Is an act good or evil? This search involves reflection on the basic sources of information for the Church: Scripture and Tradition, contemporary insights from sciences of all kinds, and personal experience. Of course, official Church teachings have a privilege here. Our inner sense of right and wrong.
Though conscience is not precisely a feeling, it is closely associated with feelings. We often know our conscience exists by the pain or guilt it causes. And yet it is much more than a feeling. Conscience is a power of judgment. It is a way of judging or discerning whether or not the general contours of my life are in harmony with what God would want and whether or not certain actions, omissions or attitudes of mine clash with moral principles.
