Definition: Non-Infallible Teachings
The normal, authoritative teachings, presumed true, that reflect the conviction of the magisterium, the teaching authority of the bishops handed down from the Apostles. For us to respond properly to such a teaching, certain study, reflection and prayer are presupposed on our part.
These Church teachings all start with the Bible and Tradition, the lived experience of the Church. They are expressed in different forms: in the teachings of councils, in various teachings from the popes, but also in local letters and directives, such as the American bishops' pastoral letters on war and peace and on the economy. Teachings of councils carry the most weight. The presence of God speaking within each of us is how teachings take root. Thus, the individual's informed conscience is a key factor in the Church's teaching.
