An antiphon is a short verse or sentence that is sung before and after a psalm or canticle that focuses on the central litugical or mystical meaning of the psalm. There are three types of antiphons:

• Psalterial: from the psalm which follows
• Historical: associated with a feast or mystery
• Mixed: from the psalm and the feast or mystery
