Definition: Magisterium, Extraordinary

A solemn act of defining a dogma of faith—that is, an infallible pronouncement of some truth as divinely revealed for the sake of our salvation. In this context, "defining" means giving a definitive judgment on a particular question. Either an ecumenical council or a pope can exercise extraordinary teaching authority. The most recent example of such a pronouncement is the teaching about the Assumption of Mary, which was defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950. There was a worldwide consensus among the bishops about this teaching that the Virgin Mary did not suffer bodily corruption at the end of her earthly life. This exalted statement about Mary, like all teaching about Mary, points to the exalted state of her son.
