An auxiliary bishop is a titular bishop appointed by the Holy See, who does not have jurisdiction, but a fullness of holy orders, and who assists a ruling bishop of a diocese in carrying out the work of that diocese. Because they are not appointed to a diocese in a jurisdictional capacity, they are named titular bishops and, unless by special privilege, do not have the right to succeed to the government of the diocese should it become vacant. Auxiliary bishops may be listed as "assistant bishops" when designated by the Ordinary of the diocese.
