The Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures) records the Israelites holding a jubilee every 50 years as a time to free slaves, cancel debts, protect the weak, proclaim liberty and let the fields rest unplanted. He also asked Christians to renew their commitment to social justice and peace so that the advent of the third millennium will truly be a jubilee for all.
