Definition: Chasuble
From the term
casula,
meaning "little house", this is the garment that priests and bishops wear on top of their alb. The color with the change of liturgical seasons. Originally it was a large cone-shaped cloth with a hole for the head, completely covering the person. Ordinary Romans in the first and second centuries, A.D., wore it over an alb to go out in public. The combination of the alb and chasuble is much like our current combination of a shirt and jacket.
