Definition: Pew
The benches for seating found in a church. Churches had no pews for much of Christian history.
Taken from the Greek term
pedion
, which was the place where the emperor and other distinguished persons sat in the arena, these fixed seats began to appear in churches about the time of the invention of the printing press (the 1500's). Intererstingly, just as the printing press "lined up" words on a printed page, people began to line up in pews.
Before the Protestant Reformation, people stood in church. At the time of the Protestant Reformation, pews enabled the congregation to sit and listen to the sermon which often lasted for several hours. Today, some churches have chairs instead of pews for more flexible use of the worship space.

is
real?
