Definition: Jesse Tree
An ancient tradition of visually representing Jesus' family tree used by generations to prepare for Christmas. Based on the prophet Isaiah's references to the "root" and the "branches" of Jesse (King David's father) when Isaiah prophesied about the hope of the Messiah, the Jesse Tree reminds us that God’s plan has been forever and that we are a part of it.
There are many ways to make a Jesse Tree. Some families ritualize the process by making ornaments out of posterboard and construction paper for each of the key people in Jesus' family, then gathering daily to share Scripture readings about them; others simply reflect on the readings privately. The important thing is to find a way to track the presence of God, day after day during Advent, in anticipation of God becoming human in baby Jesus' birth.
