Scripture: Luke 1:26-38
Music: I Will Choose Christ
Reflection: One of our classmates was rushed to the hospital after complaining that she was feeling weak. Later, we found out why – she was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening form of Leukemia. Feeling helpless, but wanting to do something, many of us decided to give blood for the first time in our lives. Uncertain as to how this procedure would make us feel, we rolled up our sleeves and said yes to helping our friend. As we renewed our energy in the canteen with some juice and pretzels, the nurse informed us that we would have to wait 56 days before we would be eligible to donate the gift of life again. While troubled by her words, we accepted the policy and looked forward to returning again in two-months.
Mary, the virgin mother of God, was the recipient of some troubling news as well. While engaged to Joseph, Mary learned that she was pregnant and that she would be giving birth to Jesus, the Son of God. Uncertain as to how this could be or what this might mean for her and her family, Mary accepted God’s invitation. She said yes to giving the gift of life to the world and became the first person to choose Christ.
As we begin/continue this Advent season, let us take time to open our eyes, ears and heart and listen for the voice of God in our own lives. What could God be inviting us to do? How can we give the gift of life to others this Advent? May we, like Mary, have the courage to choose Christ and seek to better understand who it is that God is calling us to be.
Prayer: Giver of all good gifts, we are grateful for the gift of life. Every beat of our heart, every thought in our head, every word from our mouth comes from You. Help us, Lord, to grow in our faith by listening to Your word. Give us the courage this Advent to accept and share the gift of life through Your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
