Definition: Jubilee Tradition
The Hebrew tribes developed laws to protect people and families from economic devastation from the potential ruin of situations like bad harvests and war. Every seventh year, or sabbath year, would be a time when people would set aside their land for use by the poor. Every 50th year the year following the seventh sabbatical year, marks the Jubilee year, when everyone shall return to his property (Leviticus 25). Those who have lost their land because of debts get their land back. Those who have been sold into slavery are freed to return to their families.
It was to be a holy time reminding people how God freed and chose them, how all of creation—especially the land—belonged to God ans was God's gift.
Jesus seems to have taken this message very seriously. Luke 4:16-21 refers to them as Jesus begins his public ministry and Matthew 25:31-46 highlights the theme at the end of Jesus' ministry.
