Definition: Anointing
Anointing can mean many things. From ancient times, oil has been a symbol of strength, healing and agility. For Jews, our ancestors in faith, oil is a sign of God’s appointing someone to be a priest, prophet and king.
Many Jews look forward to a time when a very special “anointed one,” a Hebrew Messiah, will come to announce God’s reign. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is this anointed one.
Our Christian Scriptures were written in the Greek language and “the Anointed One” was translated as “Christ.”
We call ourselves “Christians” because we follow the Anointed One, and because the sacraments of initiation anoint us as members of a community to continue the vocation of the Messiah, the Christ.

is
real?
