The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens have reached their midway point. Champions have been crowned, new heroes have been made and we have allowed their stories to enter into our homes and hearts. With 138 medal events completed and a few more days of competition remaining, these Olympic Games have provided us with a week to remember.
Who will ever forget standing poolside with swimmer Michael Phelps as he made waves and history winning six gold and two bronze medals in an unprecedented eight-day period of time? And what about gymnasts Carly Patterson and Paul Hamm? We were awed by the poise and sheer athleticism demonstrated by these young Olympians as they overcame what appeared to be impossible odds to win gold medals in the men's and women's all-around event. Being crowned an Olympic champion was no easy task for these young athletes - it took commitment, sacrifice and countless hours of practice. In other words, each of them demonstrated an incredible sense of discipline.
Most of us will never get the chance to represent our country and win a gold medal in the Olympic Games. Yet as Christians, we are called to live our lives as disciples with the hope of one day receiving our eternal reward. Like Olympic hopefuls, choosing to follow Christ and living lives of discipleship requires an incredible sense of discipline. How do we do it? It’s as easy as 1-2-3!
In the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians, let us "run in such a way that you may win the prize."

Music:Just Live It! by Tom Booth
Prayer: God, let me play well but fairly. Help me to learn something that matters once the game is over. Let competition make me strong but never hostile. Always let me help my opponent up. Never catch me rejoicing in the adversity of others. If I know victory, allow me to be happy; if I am denied, keep me from envy. Remind me that sports are just games. If through athletics I set an example, let it be a good one.Amen.
