Because Christian marriage is a call for people to love one another as Jesus loves, husbands and wives must not be selfish in their love. They must live for each other. They are to serve each other, sacrifice for each other, forgive each other, and help each other. In this way, all people will be able to understand how God loves us in Jesus - because they will be able to see this love lived in family life between husbands and wives, parents and children.
To love as Jesus loves, however, is not easy. That is why not only is the sacrament of Matrimony a sign and symbol of God's love and grace, but it also causes grace in the lives of the married couple and their family. This grace is necessary for the couple to live out their commitment. Thus, Matrimony is a beautiful and powerful sacrament.
The sacrament of Matrimony also requires maturity and responsibility of the partners. Before deciding to marry, a couple should be able to love responsibly and to make a mature commitment. Then, with the help of the grace of the sacrament, the couple will mirror Christ's love in every aspect of their life together. They will enjoy this love in peace, companionship, understanding, and intimacy. Faithfulness, hope, forgiveness, and strength will be integral parts of a marriage that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.
