Definition: Alb

From the term albus, meaning "white," this is the white garment that priests and bishops wear under their other vestments.

In the first and second centuries, A.D., it was the common garment that ordinary Romans wore around the house during the day. To go out in public, the alb was covered with a tent-like colored garment called a chasuble.

The combination of the alb and chasuble is much like our current combination of a shirt and jacket.
