Scripture: Matthew 2: 1-12

Reflection: When we make a team we feel accepted by our peers and we have a sense of belonging. Even though we are confident in our ability and strength, we still want the approval of our friends, teammates, and parents. As part of a team, club, or group, we often feel appreciated. We feel good about ourselves as we grow in our identity and independence.
Christmas is the time we celebrate the birthday of Jesus. In Matthew’s gospel, we find Jesus’ arrival on earth and acceptance into his earthly family. The Magi bestowed the child with gifts and bowed in worship to him, showing their acknowledgment of his divinity. As Jesus matures, we learn of God’s approval of his son: “ And a voice from heaven said, This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Matt 3: 17)
We demonstrate our acceptance and approval of others during Advent and Christmastime in many ways. We might help serve meals at a homeless shelter, sing carols for shut-ins, or provide a gift to a needy child. We can show our acceptance of others by receiving their gifts with gratitude. What will we do today so that in heaven’s tomorrow we might hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25: 23)?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for accepting us as we are. As we call upon the name of your son, Jesus Christ, whose birthday we celebrate, we thank you for the incredible gift you have given to us. We pray that your love, shining through us, will reflect acceptance to others as we seek to serve them in your name. Amen.
