Definition: Martyr
The Greek word
martyr
simply means "witness." Christians use the term to describe someone who died as a witness to Christ. Archbishop Romero, the four women killed in El Salvador and the six Jesuits are some of the contemporary martyrs. They were murdered in the 1980's civil war that pitted the government against parts of the Church.
