Abba is the emphatic form of the Hebrew noun for “father,” and it was used in primitive Christianity for invoking God as the Father of us all (cf. Rom. 8:15). The word is a title of respect applied to Bishops of the Syrian, Coptic, and Abyssinian Churches. It is also a Hebrew title of honor and forms part of some Hebrew proper names.
